You probably didn't know this about Pepsi logo

Design is a fascinating field that has been evolving for centuries. From the intricate designs of ancient civilizations to the modern, sleek creative designs of today, it has played a crucial role in shaping our world. One particularly interesting and fun story about design comes from the early 20th century and involves a competition to design the new Pepsi logo.

In 1903, Caleb Bradham created a new soft drink and named it Pepsi-Cola. The drink quickly gained popularity and in 1905, Bradham applied for a trademark for the Pepsi-Cola name and logo. The original logo featured a simple, circular design with the words "Pepsi-Cola" in script inside the circle.

However, by the 1930s, Pepsi was in need of a new logo that would better represent its brand and stand out from its competitors. So, the company held a competition to design a new logo. The competition was open to anyone, and the prize for the winning design was $500, which was a significant sum of money at the time.

Over 100 designs were submitted by artists and creative agencies, but none of them impressed the Pepsi executives. They were looking for a design that was bold, distinctive, and would make Pepsi stand out from Coca-Cola. One day, however, one of the executives happened to be at a barber shop and saw a design on a magazine cover that caught his eye. The design featured a circle split in half, with one half featuring the word "Pepsi" and the other half featuring the word "Cola".

The executive immediately contacted the artist who created the design, a young man named Walter Mack. Mack was a recent graduate of the Parsons School of Design and had created the design for a school project. He was surprised when he received the call from Pepsi and even more surprised when he was offered the $500 prize for his design.

Thus, the new Pepsi logo was created by Mack, and it was used for more than 50 years. The design was so popular that it eventually underwent trademark protection, making Pepsi one of the most well-known brands in the world.

This short story serves as an excellent illustration of how even seemingly uninteresting locations, such as a barbershop, may serve as fertile ground for creative ideas. It also emphasizes how crucial unique and daring design is in creating a brand that stands the test of time. In addition to capturing the essence of Pepsi, Mack's design made the company stand out in a competitive market.

So, the tale of the Pepsi logo is only one of the many intriguing and entertaining tales about design. Throughout human history, from ancient symbols to contemporary logos, design has played a crucial role. And for many years to come, it will continue to shape our world.
